The Shack

I have been reading a book aloud to my family. The book is "The Shack" by William P Young. It is the best novel I have ever read. Even if you never read novels, I would recommend that you read this book.

I don't want to ruin the book but I want to give you a couple of hints.

1. The main character has a tragic event that radically changes his life.
2. Eventually it leads to an encounter with God.

This book may rock your stereotypes and challenge your theology. It is well worth the risk.

It what ways has this book impacted your theology?

Did he actually encounter God, or was it a vision? Does that matter?

I think that Mack was really encountering God. God allowed Mack to see the spiritual world. It is like Lewis said we live in a shadowland. Mack saw what is more real than the material world. At one point Mack is told that when he returns to the material world with his family and his job, that God would be just as present and real as he was at the shack.

I am not sure how my theology was changed. I think that there are some questions that are still unsettled.
1. The nature of the trinity is very mystifying. The way the persons of the trinity ARE one person is hard to comprehend. That he/they function relationally in complete harmony is more important than deconstructing his/their essence.
2. God is not limited by time but allows human beings to exercise free will within the boundaries of time. Any limitations on God are self-imposed. He could chose to limit his knowledge in order to give his creation freedom to choose.
There are other theological themes in the book. Most of narrative did not settle the issue but reassured me that I have asked the right questions.
